Overview

The DIYKIT DIY-301 MT3608 DC-DC Step Up Power Module is a highly efficient, compact boost converter designed to step up low-voltage input sources to a stable, higher-voltage output. Utilizing the high-performance MT3608 switching regulator chip, this module is capable of delivering up to 2A of output current, making it an indispensable tool for makers, hobbyists, and professional engineers alike. Whether you need to power a 5V microcontroller from a single-cell LiPo battery or drive a 12V LED strip from a USB power bank, this booster module provides a reliable, space-saving solution.

Technical Details

At the heart of this module is the MT3608, a constant frequency, 6-pin SOT-23 current mode step-up converter. Operating at a high switching frequency of 1.2MHz, the IC allows the use of tiny, low-profile inductors and ceramic capacitors, minimizing the overall footprint of the board without sacrificing performance. The module features an onboard multi-turn precision potentiometer (trimmer) that allows for fine-grained adjustment of the output voltage. The current-mode PWM control loop provides excellent transient response and loop stability. Additionally, the chip incorporates internal soft-start to reduce inrush current, under-voltage lockout (UVLO) to protect batteries from deep discharge, and thermal shutdown protection to prevent damage from overheating during prolonged high-load operation.

Specifications

  • Input Voltage Range: 2V to 24V DC (must be lower than the desired output voltage)
  • Output Voltage Range: 5V to 28V DC (adjustable via onboard potentiometer)
  • Maximum Output Current: 2A (recommended continuous current is lower, varies by module revision and thermal dissipation)
  • Maximum Efficiency: Up to 97% (typically 93% depending on the input/output voltage differential)
  • Switching Frequency: 1.2 MHz
  • Operating Temperature Range:
  • 45 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius (check datasheet for thermal derating curves)
  • Physical Dimensions: Approx. 36mm x 17mm x 14mm (varies by module revision)

Applications

This versatile boost converter is ideal for a wide range of applications, including:

  • Battery-Powered Systems: Boosting single-cell Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) or Lithium-Polymer (LiPo) batteries (3.7V) to 5V for Arduino, ESP32, or Raspberry Pi modules.
  • Portable Electronics: Creating custom USB power banks or portable test equipment.
  • Robotics: Powering 6V, 9V, or 12V DC motors and servos from lower-voltage battery packs.
  • LED Driving: Providing constant voltage for high-brightness LED arrays and backlights.
  • Sensor Nodes: Elevating voltage for industrial sensors that require 12V or 24V inputs in remote IoT setups.

Integration Notes

When integrating the DIYKIT DIY-301 MT3608 module into your project, please observe the following guidelines to ensure optimal performance and prevent damage:

1. Input/Output Differential: This is a boost (step-up) converter only. The input voltage must always be at least 2V lower than the desired output voltage.

2. Initial Potentiometer Calibration: Upon first use, you may find that turning the potentiometer does not immediately change the output voltage. This is normal behavior. You may need to turn the multi-turn potentiometer counter-clockwise (sometimes up to 10 to 20 full rotations) before the output voltage begins to rise above the input voltage.

3. Current Limits: While the peak current is rated at 2A, continuous operation at 2A is not recommended without active cooling or heatsinking. For continuous loads exceeding 1A, ensure adequate airflow or attach a small heatsink to the MT3608 IC to prevent thermal throttling.

4. Wiring: Ensure low-resistance connections to the VIN+, VIN-, VOUT+, and VOUT- pads. Loose connections or thin wires can cause significant voltage drops and reduce overall system efficiency.
