This 4-slot AA battery holder provides a convenient way to power DIY electronics using four AA cells connected in series. With series wiring, the voltages add, giving a nominal 6V output when using 1.5V AA batteries (1.5V x4). The holder includes pre-attached red and black wire leads, making it easy to connect to your project without soldering directly to battery terminals. The black plastic enclosure keeps the cells aligned and helps reduce the risk of accidental shorts during prototyping and field use.

Overview

This 4-slot AA battery holder provides a convenient way to power DIY electronics using four AA cells connected in series. With series wiring, the voltages add, giving a nominal 6V output when using 1.5V AA batteries (1.5V x4). The holder includes pre-attached red and black wire leads, making it easy to connect to your project without soldering directly to battery terminals. The black plastic enclosure keeps the cells aligned and helps reduce the risk of accidental shorts during prototyping and field use.

Technical Details

The internal wiring is series-connected: the negative terminal of one cell is connected to the positive terminal of the next, resulting in a single positive output (red lead) and a single negative output (black lead). This configuration is commonly used to supply higher voltage to circuits such as DC-DC converters, motor drivers, LED strings (with appropriate current limiting), and microcontroller power inputs (when used with a regulator).

Output voltage depends on the AA cell chemistry and state of charge. Alkaline AA cells are commonly referred to as 1.5V nominal, but their open-circuit voltage can be higher when fresh and will drop under load. Rechargeable NiMH AA cells are typically around 1.2V nominal, so a 4-cell series pack will produce a lower nominal voltage than 6V. For sensitive electronics, consider measuring the pack voltage under expected load and using a suitable voltage regulator (buck/boost/LDO) to match your required rail (e.g., 5V or 3.3V).

The attached leads provide a straightforward connection method for prototypes and enclosures. For best reliability in mobile projects, strain relief and secure routing of the wires is recommended. If your application involves motors or higher transient currents, adding an inline fuse and/or power switch can improve safety and usability.

Specifications

  • Battery type: AA (4 cells required)
  • Slot count: 4
  • Electrical configuration: Series (4S1P)
  • Nominal output (with 1.5V AA cells): 6V (1.5V x4)
  • Output leads: Red (positive), Black (negative)
  • Housing material: Plastic (black)
  • Batteries included: No
  • Output voltage with other chemistries: Varies by cell type and charge state (e.g., NiMH typically lower than alkaline)
  • Current capability: Depends on AA cells used, contact condition, and load profile; verify for your application

Applications

  • Portable power for Arduino-compatible boards (with appropriate regulation to 5V/3.3V as needed)
  • Robotics and small DC motor projects (with motor driver and proper decoupling)
  • LED and lighting prototypes (use resistors or constant-current drivers as required)
  • Sensor nodes, test rigs, and classroom electronics experiments
  • Backup/temporary power source for field testing and troubleshooting

Integration Notes

  • Polarity: Red wire is positive (+), black wire is negative (–). Confirm with a multimeter before final installation.
  • Regulation: If your circuit requires a fixed voltage, use a regulator; battery voltage will change with load and discharge.
  • Protection: Consider adding an inline fuse for safety and a switch for convenient power control.
  • Noise/Transients: For motors or switching loads, add bulk capacitance near the load and follow best practices for grounding and wiring.
  • Mechanical: Secure the holder and provide strain relief for the leads in moving or handheld projects.
