The M5Stack DLight Unit is an advanced digital ambient light detection module engineered specifically for IoT applications, environmental monitoring, and smart home automation projects. At the core of this hardware is the industry-standard BH1750FVI illuminance sensor IC, which provides direct digital lux output rather than raw analog voltages. This eliminates the need for complex external ADC calibration or conversion formulas, allowing developers to retrieve accurate light intensity measurements instantly. Designed to integrate seamlessly into the M5Stack modular ecosystem via an HY2.0-4P interface, the DLight Unit bridges the gap between rapid prototyping and robust industrial-grade ambient sensing. Whether you are building an intelligent greenhouse, an adaptive desk lamp controller, or an automated display brightness manager, this sensor delivers dependable performance with minimal setup complexity.
Built around the BH1750FVI digital optical sensor, the module communicates via a fast-mode I2C interface operating at a fixed default address of 0x23. The integrated 16-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) handles internal signal processing, converting photocurrent into a 16-bit digital word that represents illuminance values from 1 up to 65535 lux. The optical design incorporates a built-in spectral response measurement engine that closely mimics the human eye's photopic response curve, ensuring that light level measurements correspond directly to perceived human brightness across different source wavelengths. The sensor exhibits remarkably low dependency on specific light source types, yielding consistent and accurate readings whether exposed to incandescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes, halogen lamps, white LEDs, or direct outdoor sunlight. Furthermore, the low current draw during active conversion and standby states makes it ideal for power-sensitive remote IoT nodes running on battery or solar power systems.

Smart home lighting control systems that adjust indoor illumination based on changing natural daylight conditions. Automated greenhouse and agricultural monitoring setups to track optimal photosynthetic light levels for plant growth. Intelligent display brightness adjustment modules for digital signage, kiosks, and embedded HMI panels. Energy-saving office automation frameworks that dim architectural lighting when sufficient ambient sunlight is present. Wearable devices and portable weather stations requiring precise optical environment tracking.
The DLight Unit connects effortlessly to any M5Stack core controller or compatible base using the included 20cm HY2.0-4P Grove cable, which carries power, ground, and I2C data lines (SDA and SCL). Because the I2C address is hardwired to 0x23, ensure there are no address conflicts if chaining multiple distinct I2C peripherals on the same bus line. Developers can utilize the official M5Stack UIFlow visual programming environment for drag-and-drop light sensing blocks, or leverage the Arduino IDE with the underlying BH1750 and M5Stack Unified libraries for advanced low-level register manipulation, measurement mode adjustments, and continuous or one-shot timing configurations.
